to give you years of protection for your expensive sail. Keeping UV light away from your sail can add years to it's life. In some sunny areas of the country, an unprotected sail can be destroyed in just a couple of years. They also protect the sail from the wind when it's sitting lightly furled in it's slip.
NOTE: Jib covers are also very important for trailered boats with attached furled sails. Towing your boat down the highway at 65 MPH with your furled sail exposed, can allow the wind to get in under the edges and cause real wear and tear, pulling at seams and breaking stitches. There have even been cases of new lightly furled sails being severely damaged in a single trip.
